Here’s to another year's end and a new year beginning at Oriel Science!
2022 was another fantastic year for Oriel Science! Located in our new venue in Swansea city centre we welcomed over 4,000 visitors of all ages through our doors!
We hosted two permanent exhibitions ‘Movement & Motion’ and ‘Covid-19 Response’, showcasing Swansea University’s cutting-edge research and researchers. As well as these exhibitions we also hosted spotlight exhibits such as ‘Join Us Underwater’ and events such as ‘Swansea Science Cafe’ in collaboration with Cancer Research Wales.
Throughout the year we welcomed some special VIP visitors, including the Minister for Education and Welsh Language Jeremy Miles MS, Minister for Climate Change Julie James MS and Swansea University’s Pro Vice Chancellors. All of our VIPs were given a tour of our venue, met some of the researchers behind the exhibits and were even able to join in with some of our school workshops!
Throughout 2022 we hosted 60 free workshops for over 200 people of all ages and over 1,000 children from local schools. The workshop themes ranged from making clay copper crucibles to visiting the microscopic world!
2022 saw the launch of our ‘Science Corner’ where visitors could watch and take part in a variety of experiments with our ‘mad scientists’. These have ranged from making chromatography butterflies and spooky ectoplasm to proving that carbon dioxide is heavier than air!
Finally, 2022 saw the launch of Oriel Science’s ‘Meet the Researcher’ series of events where our visitors were able to meet the researchers behind one of our exhibits and participate in a Q&A session
Big Things Expected in 2023!
Our hope is for 2023 to be even more exciting!
We are very happy to announce that later this year we will be launching our new exhibition on the theme of ‘Imaging’! Our Oriel Science team and Swansea University academics are already preparing new and fascinating exhibits, Science Corner experiments and workshops.
Our first workshop for 2023 will be ‘Shh Sound’, which will take place during the February half-term week - we’ll let you know once it’s available to book!
We are looking forward to exhibiting at the 2023 Swansea City Centre Conference & Exhibition at Swansea Arena on Wednesday 29th March. Why not come along and check out some of our exhibits and activities?
